Can't Wait for Spring

ChromaSine

I have been stuck on abstracts lately. I haven't created many in the past, but I think I like abstracts these days. I call this one ChromaSine--it is made from colorful sine waves at different phases (with a little nonscientific positioning by this artist). I tend to use bold colors in both my representational and non-representational artwork. As someone said to me, "your bright colors pull me in" and I can't stop looking at the art. I love rich vibrant color, too. I think the color use has help me develop the skills involved in abstracts. In any event, I sure enjoy looking at ChromaSine and I hope you do as well. Abstracts

I don't usually show my digital art abstracts because they require a skill that I never thought I had. To me, an abstract has to be more than lines that meander around without a sense of purpose. Until recently, most of my abstracts seemed to not have a purpose. I like the composition of the above abstract called Mutate. I titled it that because it reminds me of a how a human cell may mutate. This piece is a blend of science and art in that it was created by me using mathematical formulas for the composition and color. It is truly a one of a kind piece of art because I couldn't possibly remember the exact formulas or the sequence I used to generate it! Let's see, I think I took the sine of x and added it to the cosine of...aaaaagh! Well, anyway, I do like looking at the result even if I could reproduce it exactly. My 2010 calendar was published just in time for holiday shopping. From My Studio features 12 images of my art, one for each month. Country Autumn

Pensive Place

This is a painting of a favorite place of mine. It is where I go when I need to think about things and sort things out. It is serene, peaceful and quiet. I believe that the beauty of the lake, and the horizon, actually contributes to my thinking. For me, it is the perfect place to have when, as I say, life dances on your head. Life can throw you unexpected curves...Your journey can be on a road of twisty turns that you can't see around. I hope that you have a special place to go when you need to think. Chances are that at some point, your road is going to curve into some twisty turns. Click on the image to see a larger view.

I Just Don't Know

I just don't know where the idea came from for the painting that I call Shattered Face. As I have written about before, sometimes I pick up the brush and the next thing I realize is the finished painting. I wish I could bring that on at will, but I can not. In any event, I do like the effect of this face that is for lack of another word, exploding, I hope you like it, too.

A Portrait

Singer with Butterflies

I was experimenting and painting with a felt tip pen. It gives a raw quality to the painting which I think gives a nice touch to Singer with Butterlies. The colors are rich and bright, t00. I believe that I will be painting with felt tip pens again.

Peaceful Feeling

I get a Peaceful Feeling when I look at this watercolor I recently completed. The woman looks as if she is very content. Perhaps she is experiencing a pleasant memory. Or, maybe she is enjoying the moment and the yellow flowers in the meadow. I hope you get a peaceful feeling from my painting, too.

Autumn Scene

I don't know about you, but I can't wait until the leaves change from green to gold, crimson and orange. The oil painting to the right, Autumn Scene, shows the autumn leaves at their peak color. The color transition has already started here in northern New England, and depending on the weather, the peak probably will occur in 2 or 3 weeks. It will be spectacular. Winter Scene

I am enjoying Autumn but suddenly I was thinking of Winter. It is as though this painting just appeared before I realized what I was doing. Sometimes that is the way it happens. Anyway, I think this painting exudes the cold winter weather. Looking at it makes me want to reach for a blanket. Fortunately, winter is some months away. Perhaps I will paint something warm before then.

I Left My Heart There

San Francisco. The city by the bay has several Victorian homes. I call this painting Victorian Row. It is rich in color and almost demands that you look at it. To me, it captures the spirit of my favorite American city. The colors are symbolic of the diversity of the citizens. The many different hues work together and lend character to the painting just as the people do to the city. If you have ever visited there, you know why the city steals your heart.

Still in Vacation Mode

I am still in vacation mode...for good reason because I am still on my long vacation! The weather here has been terrific lately...Warm afternoons and cool mornings and evenings. The lake has been smooth as glass and I have been in my kayak and canoe. There is nothing like being still in the middle of the lake and listening to the loons. I hope you like the watercolor to the right which is simply titled "Canoe." I will be on the lake as soon as I finish posting this. You see, I am still on vacation.

Dutch Country

One of my favorite countries is The Netherlands. I have been fortunate to visit there several times and find it and the Dutch people to be warm and welcoming. The painting to the right captures my memory of the countryside far away from the busy metropolitan scene in Amsterdam. Looking at it makes me wish I was there now. One of My Favorite Places

This painting is of one of my favorite cities to visit. No, it is not in Europe. It is in Canada. Old Quebec City is quaint and charming. It offers wonderful restaurants, great views, and a wide variety of accomodations from a major hotel to small European-style rooms. You will love walking around the city on its narrow streets (and probably hate driving, especially if you have a full sized vehicle or SUV). My favorite time of year to visit is Autumn, when the mornings and evenings are brisk. You had better bring a sweater or buy one from one of the many shops that you will see. Gosh, just talking about Old Quebec City makes me want to visit again. If you can't schedule a getaway, you could purchase this painting. E-mail me.

Catching A Bubble

I hope you enjoy this painting as much as I enjoyed creating it. Rarely, do I like my work immediately after creating it, but "Catching A Bubble" is an exception. It has interesting light effects. I like the colors which contribute to the light near the mountains and on the pond and the impression of the light in the bubble and on the hand. The browns and blues work well together (which I guess is why Mother Nature used these earth tones when creating the world). ART FROM OUTSIDE THE BOX

Today, I present art from outside the box. (Yes, it is an over-used expression, but I couldn't think of a better one). First, I created this image of a cyborg or android. Some would say that I have a leg outside the box at this point, but I am going to jump out of it soon. I took the digital artwork and through the magic of the digital art process, re-created it with...um...fruits and veggies. Grapes, peppers, honeydew...you name it. The resolution of your monitor or the image itself may make it difficult to see the individual veggies. Click on the Veggie Cyborg to see a slightly larger view). When I was done, I could have made a salad from my art! Art for the eyes and the stomach...delicious. Now, if I could just figure out how to make 'scratch-n-sniff' art....

Sweet Home Chicagp

It isn't my home town, but it is sweet! And, Chicago is someone's home. Anyway, I have walked by the view I painted many times. And, each time it took my breath away. The view at night is particularly copelling with the reflections from the lights on the water. I hope that my painting captures the awe I experienced and takes your breath away. Fantasy Art

I like fantasy art. It allows me to explore sides of myself that I wouldn't normally. My newest painting, called Forest Ballerina, depicts a ballerina dancing in the woods, with sparkles glowing around her. Fantasy art usually contains angels or fairies with a background of a lake, forest, or sky. Usually, the background colors are muted or dark to enhance a glowing effect of the foreground image. Certainly, there are lots of variations on this theme. I do enjoy creating fantasy art. I do hope you enjoy Forest Ballerina.

Hall of Languages - Syracuse University

This is a painting of the Hall of Languages at Syracuse University. It is the oldest academic building on campus. The building is castle-like and along provides all with a unique panoramic view. I took a few classes in that building, and as luck would have it, they were on the top floor. The view from the inside looking out is nearly as spectacular as the view from the outside looking at the Hall of Languages. I do hope you like this painting...creating it brought back fond memories of life as an SU student.

Seattle

Seattle is one of my favorite American cities. When I picture it in my mind, it is as a vibrant, energized city. This may be contrary to some of you who envision it as a gray, rain-soaked place. But, to me, it is full of life, color and electricity. I do hope you like my painting simply titled "Seattle".

Random Neural Firing

I am often asked where I get ideas for my paintings. The truth is, I don't always know. Really, I don't. I have give the credit to "random neural firing" for these ideas. It seems as if that is a good explanation as any. Sometimes, I have no idea what I want to create. And, then I look and see the final product. I am unaware of time and can't tell you how long such episodes last. My latest watercolor is called Flower in Africa. I can tell you that when I started it, I had no idea of what was going to come out. I had no notion of using a giraffe, a woman or flower let alone the idea of the woman standing in the center of the flower that has grown tall in the sky. In some ways, it is frightening. What do my painting say about me? I don't know that either. I just fear the day when nothing will happen when I don't have any idea of what to create. Until then, I just enjoy the process and I hope you like the result.

Morning Light
